Houston-based food truck operator Clutch City Cluckers opened its San Antonio satellite last summer near UTSA, and it’s clear Alamo City residents were ready for its fiery fowl. The mobile eatery doles out chicken sandwiches, tender baskets and loaded fries, all pepped up with its proprietary spicy seasoning. We’re guessing plenty of Clutch City regulars like to tame that heat with a jumbo margarita from the bar at The Block SA, the food truck park where the mobile kitchen posts up.

Houston’s Clutch City Cluckers, a hot chicken food truck, plans on bringing its second meals-on-wheels trailer to a permanent location in San Antonio, 7038 UTSA Boulevard.

The truck, which serves Nashville-inspired hot chicken sandwiches using Halal meat, will host its two-day grand opening celebration from August 20-21 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. During these days, guests can try meals at 50 percent off, according to a news release from the business.

In February, the new hot chicken-concept food truck set up a permanent spot in Houston at 550 Val Verde. It will also offer a novelty brunch menu available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Clutch City Cluckers was founded by Ahmad Kilani, a native of Irbid, Jordan, who immigrated to the United States in 2015 to continue his education and obtain a Masters’s Degree. While attending school, Kilani worked at Abu Omar Halal, Houston’s first Halal food truck. After working for Abu Omar Halal, he quickly invested in the brand and now co-owns six locations across Texas and Louisiana.

Kilani is now using his experience and knowledge of the food industry to bring Nashville’s hot chicken to Texas with Clutch City Cluckers, cheekily using the Houston Rockets’s nickname the team earned after winning both the 1994 and 1995 NBA championships.

After the grand opening, the food truck will operate from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Sunday. Its full menu can be found via its website at clutchcitycluckers.com.

Voyage Houston – Life & Work with Ahmad Kilani

Hi Ahmad, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my business journey in the food industry by opening my first food truck in 2015. I faced many obstacles throughout my journey, but this only encouraged me to keep going. Besides the hardships that any business owner faces, I also went through unfortunate experiences that were unexpected. One of these experiences includes one of my trucks being burned down twice. This was hard to get through, especially when I was just getting started with the food truck business. Looking at the bright side, this actually motivated me to come back stronger.

I worked hard to get another truck but it was unfortunate again, I got in an accident while driving the food truck, this loss was greater than I expected. Two hits back to back had to start from scratch all over again. However; I had a lot of faith in my business and knew I was going to get through these hard times. In 2020, I decided to open a new concept in the food truck business. After six years of being in the food truck industry, I am pleased to say that I am the owner of multiple Abu Omar Halal locations, Yalla Printing and Graphics, and Clutch City Cluckers.

It wasn’t an easy journey, but I am thankful for the hardships that made me who I am right now, learned many lessons from each single one of them. In summary, what leads you to success is not only effort, but the way of thinking and set your exact and clear goals does that.

My wife is the biggest supporter who helps me to grow my business in every single way possible.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it was definitely not a smooth road for me. However; I learned many important lessons throughout the obstacles that I faced.

One of the most important lessons I learned was that being successful isn’t reached by putting just money into a business, it takes a lot of thinking, creativity, marketing, and a strong team to reach your goals, good planning is critical to have a successful business.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We work as a family. I take care of my employees, we learn together and we eat together. I’m always ready to help them achieve their dreams and their full potential.

We discuss the future and we regularly have small social gatherings, this helps me understand their personal side of this life, I believe this is why we have a family-friendly atmosphere. The majority of my team members have continued to grow within my company, I always like to hear from them how we can grow and continue to stand out, this helps set the blueprints of the future of the company.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters the most to me is to achieve my goals and hope my success story will inspire entrepreneurs nationwide and maybe worldwide. Opening locations across the nation creates job opportunities and helps support our American economy.

Especially in my hometown Houston, my success story began in this great city. Houston gave me a great opportunity to build my own business and overcome many challenges I faced at the beginning of my journey. So I will work harder and I will keep grinding until I reach my goals while living the American Dream!

Hungry? There’s a new food truck in San Antonio you can check out.

SAN ANTONIO — If you think you can handle some hot, hot chicken, there’s a place you can visit in the Alamo City. It’s a truck that started in Houston with the motto “cluck it likes it hot.”

Clutch City Cluckers has so many people following them on social media in Houston. And we started asking people, ‘Where would you like to see the next truck?’ A big shout out came out from San Antonio,” said Marketing Representative Kim Beechner. “So, we decided to put the truck here.”

The truck is on 7038 UTSA Boulevard, and it’s huge, as in 28 by 8 feet.

“Our truck is ginormous. It’s definitely bigger than any food truck you’ve seen in San Antonio. And we’ve done our very best to deck it out. So, you have all of these Instagram shots. We have a big neon sign that you can stand in front of. We even built a stage that you can climb up and stand in front of it,” said Beechner.

But we couldn’t not come here and see the most popular menu items:

“This is what we’re known for. It’s chicken tenders on a brioche bun with coleslaw and sliced pickles,” said Beechner.

The Spicy Juicy Lucy

“Our new creation — it’s next level. If you love cheese, you’re going to love this,” said Beechner. You get four slices of Texas toast stuffed with cheese, cole slaw, tenders and pickles, starting at $10.

You can also customize your spice. We couldn’t come here and not try the hottest of the hot, AKA the Clucket Like it’s Hot.

“Clutch City Cluckers is taking it to the next level with a whole variety of different spices,” said Beechner.

We tried it and can confirm — it’s hot!
